Makalawena Beach is a stunning, secluded white sand beach. It's super picturesque... exactly what you would imagine seeing on a postcard as an iconic Hawaiian paradise.
There was hardly anyone else on the beach because it is quite the trek to get in. Firstly, we drove miles into Mahaiula Beach on an uneven barely paved road through the lava fields. We were lucky our two-wheel drive economy rental car made it in one piece! After that we walked the 2 mile hike from Mahaiula, again through lava fields, to Makalawena Beach.

We set up our blanket under a shady tree, ate chips and salsa, and played with the waves. Our only neighbors were an older couple reading books under their beach umbrella. Here are more pictures.
