Haeundae Sand Art Festival and Dalmaji Hill

This weekend was the Haeundae Sand Art Festival.  All along the shore people gathered at this week long event to look at the sand art, play games, watch performances, and eat food.

It looked as if the theme for this year was movies and Hollywood. Here are some shots of the sand art.

Aside from the enormous hills of sand art, there were a lot of art booths and activities mainly aimed for children.

There were also a variety of food stalls, which are a staple anytime other time of the year at Haeundae Beach.

After spending a few hours at the Sand Festival, I walked along the coast up to Dalmaji Hill to watch a performance of Shakespeare's Twelfth Night (which one of my coworkers was directing). The walk uphill was quite cool. I went from being at the beach into a forest in less than 20 minutes.

From beach...
... to forest!

At the top of the Dalmaji Hill was a really cute area with stores, restaurants and coffee shops.  The buildings looked quite picturesque amidst the trees.  Hidden in this area is Dalmaji Amaptheater, a stage surrounded by the forest with the sea as the back drop. This was where the performance was.

I met up with Anne and Renee to watch the play.  They are amazing and came packed with a camping stove and lunch.  We had a barbecue right there!

Directions to Haeundae Beach
From Haeundae Station, take Exit 5. Head straight and you will arrive at Haeundae Beach.

Directions to Dalmaji Ampatheater
From Haeundae Beach (give yourself 20-30 minutes): Facing the ocean, turn left and walk all the way to the end of the beach, past the Paradise Hotel and Pale de CZ. Take a left at the end of the beach up the hill. At the top of the hill you'll come to a large intersection. Take the right up the hill on a tree-lined walkway. Walk for about 20 minutes. You'll eventually come to an area full of coffee shops. It's just a bit further on your right, across the street from the Alexander Restaurant (restaurant gaudily decorated with statues) and downhill through the trees.

By Taxi: From Haeundae or Jangsan tell the taxi driver - Dalmaj-gili, Alexander Shikdang or Alexander Restaurant.
