Flower Pancake Class

This month's Korean culture class, which is organized by Dalma Busan Buddhism was on Flower Pancake Making.

Hwajeon is a small, sweet pancake made using edible flower petals such as asazaleas or chysanthemum, rice flower, and sugar. Today we were going to learn how to make them! Outside the temple they set up tarps, low tables, and camping stoves for us to cook on.

At first, we gathered around the expert as she demonstrated how to make the hwajeon.

Then we tried making our own.

First start with the dough made from rice flower and water.

Then shape the dough into small circular disk about 1/2 inches thick.

Then start frying the dough in a bit of oil.
After one side is cooked, flip it over and decorate with the flowers.

Yay!

Before eating, drizzle with a simple sugar syrup!

These were super easy to make and I'm sure with a bit of practice could make a really elegant dessert dish!

Directions to Hongbeopsa
From Nopo station, take Exit 1. It is easiest to take a taxi from there.
